Here are two standard Edison Filament lamps,
One made in the 1800s and One made in 2010, they are identical, Both are simple glass vacuums with a coiled tungsten filament inside.
 
 
Light Emitting Diodes LEDs are produced in many shapes and sizes, The 5 mm cylindrical package (red, fifth from the left) is the most common, The colour of the plastic lens is not always the same as the colour of light, for instance purple plastic is often used for infrared LEDs, and most blue LEDs have a clear housing. There are also some extremely tiny LEDs such as those found on cell phone key pads.
LEDs are now made into light fittings ready to directly replace old tubes and bulbs, making the move over to use low cost LEDs very simple.
